Wicked, and Guns, Germs & Steel
The plane ride was long. About 12 hours, airport to airport. I started reading Guns, Germs & Steel: The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond. It's a fascinating attempt to answer a complicated question (why did some areas of the world produce highly technological and militaristic societies that went on to dominate the world) and so far deeply interesting.
I also watched Wicked, the movie version of the musical about the Wicked Witch from the Wizard of Oz (itself a movie based on a book). I should preface this by saying I don't know anything about the musical--I never saw it, and managed to miss all the music. It was quite a fun movie, and I could see how some of the set pieces would have made it an amazing stage show. It didn't quite translate onto screen (you don't get that same sense of big scale dance choreography, because the camera tends to focus more on people's faces?) but it was quite fun. I'm not sure that it needed to be so long though. I'd probably see the stage show, if it ever came up as an opportunity.
We managed to sort out our UK sims for roaming, so I can get text messages and calls. I still need to figure out a bank account and cell phone option for the USA.
Now that we're actually here, it feels weird. Part of my brain refused to believe I'd ever make it, and now I am?
