Turtle's Paradise

The good old days

I realise that, one of the reasons older people are so prone to saying 'the good old days' is that they see, first hand, how much changes and how much is lost.

Technical/scientific progress is generally a good thing. Look at this graph on child mortality and tell me things were better back then. Microscopes and germ theory, vaccinations, modern medicine, antibiotics... amazing and wonderful things.

But then you see something like the internet get invented, be this amazing potential resource, and then get absolutely fucking destroyed by unregulated profiteering. Enshittification, sloppification, bots yelling at bots, and meanwhile universities are crumbling under AI written essays and your next doctor will trust ChatGPTs hallucinations because it's easier and faster.

I guess the problem isn't modern technology, it's profiteering. It's always been that. The tragedy of the commons.

In other news, it's been snowy here, which stopped my brief attempt to start running again. I did shovel the sidewalk, which felt very satisfying.
