returning home
We spent a few days visiting my parents and brother. It was nice. I got to drive a fair amount, which is good to keep me in practice now that we don't have a car. It did include driving at night, which I genuinely hate. I have terrible night vision, and headlights these days are soooo bright.
Obviously, the American election is a disaster. An awful outcome that will impact millions of people. I'm not going to write an opinion piece about What Went Wrong, because there are gallons of ink being spilled on that very question. I am sad, because I genuinely, truly, didn't think it would go that way, which suggests I'm in a little liberal bubble of my own.
I have watched a few movies recently:
- A Very Long Engagement - beautiful, quirky, sad film.
- Guys & Dolls - one of my favourite movies from when I was a kid, and continues to be a joy.
- Dune 2 - actually enjoyed this a lot, some of the shots look like oil paintings. Makes me want to re-read Dune.
I've also been re-reading the Flashman novels, which, I won't lie, are pretty dated, but I still find them fun. They remind me that human beings have always been fucking stupid, but we keep surviving anyway.
And I've been writing fanfic, and struggling through one of the most convoluted job applications ever. For a temp, 20-hour a week, evening job. Sigh.
Life is okay though. I get to sleep, drink tea, write and read, and that's all I ever really wanted.
